What Makes Us Different
You Deal Directly With Phil
You deal with Phil from the first call through to the final walkthrough. He runs through the job with you, estimates it and oversees the standard, so nothing is handed to someone who never spoke to you about what you wanted.
Family Owned & Local
A small Hastings-based family business serving the Peninsula, in operation since 2020 with 15 years in the trade behind it. You get the care and accountability that comes with a name on the door.
Trade Qualified & Fully Insured
Phil is a trade qualified landscape gardener and a licensed excavator and skid steer operator, and the business carries full public liability insurance. That means levelling, excavation and prep are handled properly, not improvised.
Honest, Practical Advice
Phil will talk you through what tends to work for your space and your plants, and will happily challenge a DIY or AI generated concept where it looks unlikely to work in practice. You get a bed that suits the reality of your garden rather than a picture that ignores it.
Made Properly
Careful preparation and drainage give a bed its best chance of staying square and solid under the weight of wet soil. It is the difference between a bed made once and one that sags after a season.
Custom Raised Garden Beds & Veggie Patches, Made For Your Space
These are made to suit your site, not bought off a shelf and squeezed in where they fit. A raised garden bed adds height and dimension to a garden and makes it far easier to work without constant bending and kneeling, and because it is made to your space it uses the area properly. Our custom raised garden beds on the Mornington Peninsula are shaped around your garden and how you actually want to use the space, whether that is a productive veggie patch or a feature planter by the entertaining area.
What We Install
Phil installs custom raised garden beds, dedicated veggie patches and planter-style beds, sized and shaped to the space and made to the estimate. Materials are chosen to suit the look and budget you are after: Corten steel, timber, red gum sleepers, mud rock, bluestone pitchers, bricks, besser block, and stone walling or cladding. Hard-wearing timber and steel raised garden beds are the most popular choice, though the right material always comes down to your garden style and how the bed will be used. For a lower maintenance, self-watering setup, wicking beds are an option worth discussing, and for material choices that tie into a feature wall, Phil can carry the look through with.
Better Drainage And Healthier Soil
One of the advantages of a raised garden bed is control over what your plants grow in. Starting with a prepared base and a chosen fill means you set the soil and drainage from the outset rather than working with whatever is already there.
Easier, More Accessible Gardening
Raised height makes a real difference for anyone who finds ground-level gardening hard on the back and knees. Accessible gardening at a comfortable working height lets older gardeners, and anyone who simply wants to keep it enjoyable, stay hands-on for longer. It is one of the most common reasons Peninsula clients get in touch about raising their beds.
Custom-Made Vs Flat-Pack Kits
Flat-pack kits have their place, but they come in fixed sizes, arrive as a box to assemble yourself, and rarely account for your actual site. A custom bed is sized to fit the space exactly and set on properly prepared and drained ground. There is no self-assembly, no compromise on dimensions, and no guessing whether the base will hold up. For most gardens, a bed made and installed once tends to be better value than a kit that needs replacing when it warps or bows. Raised garden beds are also a practical middle ground between ground-level planting and more involved options like vertical gardens, giving you height and structure without the ongoing upkeep.
What Your Estimate Covers
Your estimate covers the materials and labour to make the bed as agreed. Soil and plants are estimated per job rather than assumed, because many clients like to fill and plant out themselves, which is completely fine. If you would rather Phil handled the soil, planting and plant selection too, that can be estimated as part of the job, and the Planting & Plant Selection page covers that side in more detail. A raised garden bed also works beautifully as one part of a wider Garden Renovations & Makeovers page.

Raised Garden Beds On The Mornington Peninsula: Local Knowledge & Expertise
Based in Hastings, Phillip Louk Landscaping works right across the Peninsula, from the coastal villages through to the hinterland. Here is what we tend to come across.
- A lot of the enquiries we get come from people who are tired of getting on their hands and knees to weed, and who want the garden to stay easy to use as they get older.
- The Peninsula has a strong grow-your-own culture, so a genuine, productive veggie patch is one of the most requested jobs rather than a decorative box of soil.
- Some clients want to fill and plant out the bed themselves, and others would rather we handled it end to end. Both are common, and both are easy to work with.
- We get asked about beds for holiday homes and second properties, where the owner is not there every week.
- Plenty of Peninsula gardens have a spot that has never worked at ground level, whether that is the shady corner or the patch that is always awkward to reach.
Phil will talk through what suits your space during the free estimate, based on what he sees on the day rather than a template.

Frequently Asked Questions About Raised Garden Beds & Veggie Patches On The Mornington Peninsula
What is the best material for a raised garden bed?
There is no single best material, it depends on the look you want and your budget. Phil works with Corten steel, timber, red gum sleepers, mud rock, bluestone pitchers, bricks, besser block, and stone walling or cladding. Each has its strengths, and Phil will talk you through what suits your garden and your growing plans as part of the estimate.
How deep or tall should a raised garden bed be?
It depends on what you are growing and how accessible you want it. Deeper beds tend to suit vegetables and root crops that need more room, while ornamental planting can often sit in a shallower bed. If comfort and accessibility are the priority, the bed can be made higher so there is little to no bending, and Phil sizes each one around both the plants and the gardener.
Should a raised garden bed or veggie patch be in sun or shade?
Most vegetables prefer plenty of sun, while some leafy greens and shade-tolerant plants are happier out of the harshest afternoon light. Phil takes note of the direction the space faces and where the shade sits when he is on site, and will talk through the best spot with you. Getting the position right from the start makes a difference to how well things grow.
What should go in the bottom of a raised garden bed?
A good bed is more than a box filled with dirt. The base needs proper preparation for drainage, and the bed is filled with a quality soil and compost mix suited to what you are growing rather than whatever is cheapest. Getting the layering and drainage right at the bottom is a big part of keeping the soil healthy.
Do you include the soil and plants, or just make the bed?
The estimate covers the materials and labour for the bed itself. Soil and plants are estimated per job rather than assumed, because plenty of clients enjoy filling and planting out themselves. If you would prefer Phil to handle the soil, planting and plant selection as well, just ask and it can be estimated as part of the job.
Are custom raised garden beds better than a flat-pack kit?
For most gardens, yes. A custom raised garden bed on the Mornington Peninsula is sized to fit your space exactly and set on properly prepared and drained ground, with no self-assembly required. Flat-pack kits are convenient and cheaper up front, but they come in fixed sizes and often need replacing when they warp or bow, so a bed made correctly once tends to be better value over time.
How long does it take to make a raised garden bed or veggie patch?
It varies with the size and complexity of the job. Lead times are shorter in the cooler months, sometimes around two weeks in winter, and busier over summer when they can stretch to two or three months, so enquiring early is worthwhile. Phil gives you a realistic timeframe as part of the estimate.
Do raised garden beds help with drainage and weeds?
They can. A well-made raised garden bed gives you more control over drainage and soil, and because you are starting with a clean fill there tend to be fewer weeds than in an established ground-level bed. Those benefits rely on the bed being made and drained correctly, which is where a professional job earns its place.
Can raised garden beds make gardening easier for older or less mobile gardeners?
Absolutely. Raising the bed to a comfortable working height reduces bending and kneeling and keeps gardening enjoyable for longer. It is one of the most common reasons clients get in touch about raised garden beds, and the height can be tailored to suit the gardener.
Do you offer ongoing maintenance after the bed is in?
Yes, ongoing maintenance is available on request if you would like a hand keeping the garden in shape. It can be arranged when you book or added later, and you can see what regular upkeep covers on our garden maintenance.
