What Makes Us Different

Owner Led From Start To Finish

Phil deals with you directly, runs through the job, estimates it and oversees the standard. It is one point of contact and one consistent standard, with constant communication from the first call to the final day on site. Where a specialist trade is needed on part of the job, Phil arranges it and tells you up front.

Boutique & Detail-Obsessed

Phil takes on a small number of jobs at a time, which is exactly why the finish is so meticulous. Your space is put together to match what you pictured, not rushed through to get to the next job. The details are where a good entertaining area is won or lost.

The Groundwork Done Right

Trade qualified, with full public liability insurance, and a licensed excavator and skid steer operator, Phil gets the base prep, falls and drainage right from the ground up. It is the part most people never see and the part that matters most.

15 Years in Creating Quality Landscapes

Phil brings 15 years across both soft and hard landscaping, and a real feel for how local conditions treat an outdoor space. That experience shows up in the materials chosen and the way the space comes together.

Honest Scope

Where part of a project needs a registered builder, Phil tells you up front rather than stretching beyond what a landscaper should take on. No surprises halfway through, no overpromising. Straight answers from the start.

What Is an Outdoor Entertaining Area?

Think of it as your outdoor room: a defined, usable zone for dining, relaxing and having people over, prepared properly from the ground up rather than bolted on as an afterthought. It is the natural extension of your indoor space into comfortable outdoor living, and it is customised to your home, your block and the way you actually use the backyard. No two are the same, because no two gardens or families are.

What Goes Into Your Entertaining Area

Every space is scoped to suit the site, but these are the elements Phil includes most often.

Paved Entertaining Areas

A level, beautifully finished paved area in bluestone, travertine or crazy paving forms the foundation of the space. Paving choice and pattern are matched to your home, and it all sits on a correctly prepared base. See the full range on the paving and crazy paving page.

Fire Pit Areas

A fire pit on the Mornington Peninsula is the year-round focal point that pulls a space together, using heat-resistant stone chosen to handle repeated heat. It is what turns a summer-only patio into somewhere you will happily sit on a cool evening.

Built-In Seating

Custom built-in bench seating in timber, cladding or stone walling wraps the space and matches everything around it. It seats more people than furniture, holds up in the wind, and frames the area beautifully. Stone and cladding seating ties in naturally with feature stonework.

Feature Stone Elements

Freestanding feature walls and natural stone seating frame and enclose the area, giving it a sense of being its own room. They add character, shelter and a natural edge that planting alone cannot.

The Groundwork Underneath

Excavation, base prep, correct falls and drainage are worked out to suit the site, and on sloping blocks that can include levelling. It is the least visible part of the job and the one that determines how well everything above it holds up.

Tie-Ins With the Wider Garden

As part of a larger job, Phil can bring in planting, irrigation and basic garden lighting so the space feels finished and cohesive. Anything involving electrical work that needs an electrician sits outside his scope, and he will point you to the right trade for it.

A note on scope: roofed structures such as pergolas, verandahs and carports sit outside what Phil takes on, as do built-in outdoor kitchens. He is a landscaper, not a registered builder. Phil can advise once onsite if any part of the works may require a permit or registered builder.

Shaping a Space You Will Actually Use

A space that works is less about a fancy drawing and more about thinking through how you will really live in it. Start with a focal point, often the fire pit, then plan the flow from the house out so the area feels connected rather than marooned at the back of the yard. Balance hard paving with planting, lighting and easy upkeep from the very start.

This is where Phil is genuinely useful. Design here is hands-on and collaborative. During your free estimate, Phil will work with you to shape your ideas and scope out your project, taking measurements, photos and videos of the space. He is also happy to work alongside a designer or architect if you have engaged one.

Choosing Materials for a Coastal Setting

On the Peninsula, material choice is not just about looks. Durable bluestone paving and quality natural stone tend to handle coastal conditions better than cheaper finishes. Around a fire pit, heat-resistant stone matters, because the wrong stone can crack or perish over time. And every paved surface is only as good as the base beneath it, which is why correct preparation matters as much as the stone on top.

When Is the Right Time?

The best time is usually when something prompts it: a new home or renovation, a tired old area that no longer suits the house, or a backyard that simply goes unused because there is nowhere comfortable to sit. Plenty of people also put in an outdoor entertaining area purely because they want somewhere to entertain right through the year. If any of that sounds familiar, it is worth a conversation.

Outdoor Entertaining Areas on the Mornington Peninsula: Local Knowledge

The Peninsula practically runs on outdoor living, between the beaches, the wineries and long weekends spent at home, so a proper entertaining space is rarely a luxury here. Phil has worked across the region for years, from the coastal townships of Mornington, Mount Martha and Sorrento to the hinterland and hills around Red Hill and Arthurs Seat. He works to the way people here actually use their gardens.

  • Gardens closer to the coast sit in more exposed positions, which is worth factoring into materials and finishes.
  • Sloping blocks through the hills around Red Hill, Arthurs Seat and Mount Martha often need levelling to create a usable, flat entertaining zone.
  • A real Peninsula winter means a fire pit on the Mornington Peninsula is what makes a space usable on cool evenings, not just in January.
  • Lifestyle and acreage properties in the hinterland suit larger, looser entertaining zones, while compact coastal courtyards want something sheltered and intimate.
  • Newer estates sit houses much closer together, so plenty of jobs call for compact machinery. Where there is no machine access at all, the excavation is done by hand.

Phil understands these conditions because he works in them week after week, and he shapes entertaining areas that suit the local climate rather than fighting it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Entertaining Areas on the Mornington Peninsula

  • What is included in an outdoor entertaining area?

It depends on your space, but a typical job brings together a paved area, a fire pit area, built-in seating and feature stone, all sitting on properly prepared groundwork. Every job is customised, so the exact scope is set out in your written estimate. Phil works out what suits your backyard, your block and how you plan to use it.

  • Do I need a permit or a registered builder for an outdoor entertaining area?

Phil can advise once onsite if any part of the works may require a permit or registered builder.

  • Is stone safe to use around a fire pit?

Yes, provided the right stone is used. Heat-resistant stone matters around a fire pit, because the wrong stone can crack or perish over time under repeated heat. Phil selects stone rated for the job and will talk you through the options on site.

  • What materials do you use for paved entertaining areas?

Bluestone, travertine and crazy paving are the common choices, selected to suit your home and the setting. The right material depends on the look you are after, the position and the budget. Phil talks you through the options on site so the finish matches the house rather than fighting it.

  • Can you put seating into the area?

Yes. Built-in seating can be worked in using timber, cladding or stone walling, and it is shaped to match the rest of the space. Built-in seating holds more people than loose furniture, handles the wind, and frames the area as a proper room.

  • How long does it take?

That comes down to the scope of the job. As a rough guide, lead times run from around two weeks in winter through to two to three months in peak summer, and the timing for your job is confirmed in the estimate. Booking ahead is wise if you want the space ready for the warmer months.

  • How much does an outdoor entertaining area cost?

Every job is customised, so pricing is set through a free on-site visit and a written estimate rather than a flat rate. The main things that drive cost are the size of the area, the materials chosen, site access and how much groundwork is involved. You get an accurate figure for your actual project, not a vague ballpark.

  • Do you handle the base prep and drainage?

Yes, and it is one of the most important parts of the whole job. Proper excavation, base preparation and correct falls are worked out to suit your site, with drainage put in where it is needed. Every job is different, so what is being done is set out in your estimate.

  • Can the space be used year-round on the Peninsula?

Often, yes, and that is usually the whole point. A fire pit and materials chosen for the setting can turn a summer-only patio into a space that works through the cooler months too.

  • Do you offer maintenance afterwards?

Yes, optional ongoing maintenance and a plant establishment period are available if you would like them. There is also a 5% discount on regular maintenance when it follows a completed landscaping job over $5,000. It is an easy way to keep the space looking its best.
