What does plant selection & planting involve?
Plant selection makes a real difference to how a garden fills in. Phil helps you choose, source and plant for your space, whether that is a single bed that needs a refresh, mass planting across an acreage property, or a small block with limited access. It can run as part of a full landscaping job, sit alongside a few smaller garden improvements, or stand on its own as one of our dedicated planting services on the Mornington Peninsula.
How we choose the right plants for your garden
This is the part most people underestimate. Before anything goes in, Phil talks through the things that tend to matter: the soil and how it drains, how sun and shade move across the space, exposure to wind, the room each plant needs at its mature size, and the style you want to end up with. Plant suitability is discussed against your actual garden rather than a generic list.
Phil works through these choices with you on site as part of the free estimate, talking through what suits and why. If you have a look in mind, he will shape the selection around it. He is also happy to work alongside a designer or architect you have engaged.
Planting that fits your project
Planting rarely happens in isolation, so we handle garden planting on the Mornington Peninsula and further afield in whatever way suits your project.
As part of a full garden renovation
When planting is the finishing layer on a larger transformation, it is planned alongside the rest of the works so everything ties together. See
Garden Renovations & Makeovers for the full picture.
Alongside other works
Planting often pairs naturally with new
Raised Garden Beds & Veggie Patches and other garden improvements, chosen so the plants and the structures work together.
Planting on its own
From a single bed through to mass planting on acreage, and the tricky small or limited-access sites others shy away from, Phil takes on standalone planting where the garden already has good bones and just needs the right plants in the ground.
Caring for your new plants
Getting plants in the ground is the start, not the finish. Ongoing maintenance is available on request to keep everything looking its best, and a plant establishment period can be arranged so young plants get attention while they settle in. For watering that takes care of itself, ask about Irrigation as part of the works, and see Garden Maintenance for regular upkeep once the garden is established.

Plant Selection for Mornington Peninsula Gardens
The Peninsula is not one growing environment, it is many. A beachside garden in Blairgowrie sits in very different conditions to an inland block at Red Hill or Moorooduc, and Phil works across all of them week in, week out.
- Gardens closer to the water sit in more exposed positions, which tends to narrow the sensible options.
- Ground conditions vary from block to block, even within the same suburb, which can change both plant and drainage choices.
- Hot, dry summers make drought-tolerant planting and water-wise selections worth considering.
- Shaded inland sites often call for a different palette again.
- Indigenous and native species are a popular choice, and they suit plenty of local gardens.
Matching plants to conditions is a big part of the job. Phil brings hands-on local experience to your specific site and talks through plants that suit it. Plants are a living product, so nobody can promise how any garden will perform, but getting the selection right gives it a better start.

Frequently Asked Questions About Plant Selection on the Mornington Peninsula
How do you choose the right plants for my garden?
It comes down to matching the plant to the conditions. Phil talks through the soil and drainage, your sun and shade aspect, wind exposure, the space each plant needs at maturity, and the style you want. The principle is simple: the right plant in the right place.
Do you supply the plants, or do I buy them myself?
Phil normally allows a plant budget in the estimate, then works through the selection with you during the job. That way you can see what is actually available at the time rather than committing to a fixed list up front. If you would prefer to supply some plants yourself, that can be worked in too.
Can you do planting on its own, or only as part of a bigger job?
Both. Phil takes on standalone planting, from refreshing one bed through to mass planting on acreage, and he also folds planting into a full renovation as the finishing layer. Whichever suits your project and budget.
What plants do well on the Mornington Peninsula?
Hardy, drought-tolerant and coastal-suited species are popular choices across the Peninsula, and indigenous natives are often a low maintenance option. That said, the right plant depends on your specific site, because a species that does well in a sheltered inland garden may struggle a few kilometres away near the coast. Phil talks through options based on your actual conditions rather than a one-size-fits-all list.
I have an AI generated or DIY garden concept. Can you work from it?
Yes, and Phil is happy to. He will also sense-check it before anything goes in the ground, because DIY and AI generated concepts very often miss the practical realities: sun and shade, drainage, the mature size of each plant, and overcrowded beds where nothing has room to grow. Where something looks unlikely to work, Phil flags it early and explains why, then suggests what might work instead. Clients regularly thank us for that honest steer, and it is far cheaper to fix a concept on paper than to replant a whole bed a year later.
When is the best time to plant?
It depends on the plant, but as a general rule the cooler, wetter months give new plants a gentler start, while summer planting needs more watering to establish. Phil will talk through the timing for your chosen species and your site when he estimates the job.
Do you offer maintenance after planting?
Yes, ongoing maintenance is available on request, along with a plant establishment period so young plants get looked after while they settle in. It is an easy add-on for clients who would rather not manage the upkeep themselves. See Garden Maintenance for what regular care can cover.
Which areas do you service?
